First Painting of 2024

To start off the 2024 new year, I always try to make it a point to place paint on canvas on the very first day of the year. It sets the tone, both logistically and symbolically, to signal internally that the studio is ready for the new year, and that I will start the year off with painting. It’s very easy, surprisingly, to go for weeks, or sometimes months, without actually painting — especially during the busy fall exhibition schedule and hectic holiday shows.

By putting paint on canvas, it readies my brush, and readies my mind.

So, here’s some of the process images of the first painting I created on New Year’s Day, the first of 2024. It follows a familiar motif of still examining the rains that occur with reflections off silhouetted landlines and water reflections, but in different colors, this time sunset instead of nightttime.
