Dark Rain, Light Rain on exhibit January 2024 at SoWa Studio 410
January is the month immediately after the hustle and chaos of the holidays of December. Once all the hubbub and hustle ceases, January just becomes another cold winter month, minus the sparkly lights and Christmas carols. It is a month of dark light, the sun setting early on short days, and yet also a very bright month when the sun’s intensity feels brighter and shadows longer, for the small time it’s out. In the course of exploring various subjects and themes for her rainy day paintings, Rachel Brask has created a broad range of bright and colorful paintings, and more recently several that explore the darker tones of dusk and nighttime. In this exhibition, Brask re-curates selections of her paintings to show alternating paintings of light rain, and of dark rain, but all with some element of light and luminosity running along with the drips from the rain. This show highlights the higher contrasts between paintings inspired by rain.
